I rarely use the AR camera for TomoLife. It's fun to see your miis outside of your game but it's a hassle to set up. You need the "?" AR card. Also the patience of a saint. (I am neither patient nor a saint.) Additionally, if the environment isn't bright enough, say hello to super grainy photos. So, yeah. Helloooooo.
